Mount Meru Climb – 3 Days
$800 per person
Mount Meru 3 days climbing tour – Mount Meru is located in the center of Arusha National Park. It stands at 14,977 feet tall which makes it the second highest peak in Tanzania. And fifth highest in Africa. It makes for a great acclimating hike before you do your Kilimanjaro climb. Meru is a dormant volcano. You will see views of the Ash cone as you ascend to the summit.
Unlike Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru lacks the crowds. This makes for a peaceful, yet tough climb. In addition to the solitude, you also enjoy sleeping in huts.
Since Meru is located inside Arusha National park you may glimpse a variety of wildlife, including giraffe, zebra, colobus monkeys, leopards and hyenas, in the park’s small but bustling 53 square miles of natural habitats.
For the first day on the mountain, an armed ranger will escort you from gate to camp. This is to prevent poaching of the exotic animals. Depending on your group size, you will also have one of our guides with you as well as a modest mountain crew made up of a chef and several porters.
The trail follows the north rim of Meru’s crater along a stunning ridgeline with views of Kilimanjaro. This trail continues upward on what’s left of the volcanic crater. Once you reach the summit the view of Mount Kilimanjaro and looking down into Meru crater are unforgettable.

Day 1: Arusha Town (1400m) – Miriakamba Hut (2500m)
After an early morning breakfast we will drive you to the Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. At this time, the porters will organize and pack the belongings for the hike while you and your guide register with the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA). You will then begin your ascent in Arusha National Park.
The first day of hiking is similar to a walking safari; you should expect to see giraffes, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and potentially elephants near the trail. Due to the high possibility of spotting wildlife, an armed ranger, hired through the National Park, is required to hike with our team for the duration of the hike. As you continue hiking, you will pass the Ngarenanyuki River and a beautiful waterfall at the base of Mt. Meru.
Upon arriving to Miriakamba Hut (2500m), your chef will prepare a hot dinner and washing water for you. Enjoy the beautiful sunset and overnight.
5-7 hours hiking
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2500m) - Saddle Hut (3500m)
After breakfast, you will start ascending up the steep trail along the ridge of the saddle. You may see various wildlife along the way! The trail has views of Mt. Meru Crater and the Ash Tray. When you arrive at camp, you have the option of hiking Little Mt. Meru (3820m) with your guide to further acclimate. Day 3: Saddle Hut (3500m) – Little Meru (4566m) – Arusha (1400m)
Your guide will wake you at 00:30 for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt at 1:30am. The trail starts off on a steep grade to Rhino Point (3800m) to Cobra Point (4350m). The last hour of the hike you will scramble on a rocky ridge between the crater and inner cliffs of Meru. You will reach the summit of Meru (4565m) at sunrise with spectacular views of Mt. Meru Ash Tray and Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Enjoy your views then descend to Saddle Hut for a short break. You will then continue descending to Momella gate. You will hike through forest and meadows where it is likely to spot wildlife.

Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located 70 kilometres (43 mi) west of Mount Kilimanjaro in the country of Tanzania. At a height of 4,562.13 metres (14,968 ft),[1][4] it is visible from Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day,[5] and is the fifth-highest mountain in Africa, dependent on definition.
Mount Meru is located just north of the city of Arusha, in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. It is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, after Mount Kilimanjaro. The Momella route – which starts at Momella gate, on the eastern side of the mountain – is used to climb Mount Meru.[6]
Much of its bulk was lost about 7,800 years ago due to a summit collapse.[7] Mount Meru most recently had a minor eruption in 1910.[2] The several small cones and craters seen in the vicinity probably reflect numerous episodes of volcanic activity. Mount Meru's caldera is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) wide.[8]
Mount Meru is the topographic centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, and also monkeys and leopards.
